First Okra 2009

I'll be firing up the grill in a day or so, as our okra has started coming in. Most of the Clemson Spineless plants have pods, with the first few now obtaining a harvestable length. In comparison, the Emerald and Cajun Delight varieties are growing very slowly. They appear to be several weeks away from producing any pods.

I can't believe you already have tomatoes and okra. Are you going to try and get two rounds of crops this year?

I agree with Fern. I'm so surprised your tomatoes and okra are doing so well and fruiting! My tomato plant is still so small! And no flowers yet!

Thanks for the comments Fern and DP. It is cool to have tomatoes so early. Unfortunately I'm afraid that their produciton might be short lived. The heat has kicked in way too early this year. We've recently had a few days over 100 and are hitting the high 90s almost daily. All the tomato blooms are dropping as a result. I plan on replanting in the Summer for a second crop in the Fall. Hopefully it will work out better than last year's attempt!

Hi John, I have been lurking your blog for a couple of months, as I am a first time grower of anything but turf grass...and I know absolutely NOTHING! I am doing only tomatoes this year, just to keep it simple.

Congrats on your early results!!!

I live in the Mojave desert in Hesperia, CA 92345 (three hours away from Las Vegas). I am using large 15 gallon pots, to keep a larger "reserve" of both water and root insulation as the weather gets hotter.

I am growing a San Marzano, Early Girl, Early Girl Bush, and a Heatwave. They absolutely exploded in growth this past week and a half.

Thanks for blogging!

I'm a container gardener, too. On a city balcony. I can't believe your tomatoes look ripe already! Mine are barely past the sprout stage at this point. Cheers!

Man, I am jealous! Those plants look gorgeous, and I'm just getting started on planting for real this weekend. I hope the harvest lasts long enough to get some real enjoyment out of them. Try to keep cool!

John... I really like your blog. Have you every used any type of self-watering reservoir for your containers? I am very busy and with the heat in Vegas, I have killed many container plants because I forgot to water them.

I had no room for okra this year.. trying 2 different kinds of sunflowers.

I am curious to see how the corn turns out!! may have to try that next year.

You have a very nice and interesting blog. I'm doing some container gardening too (in Michigan) so I'll enjoy keeping up with your site. Your veggies look good enough to eat!

Hi John, you have a great blog! I live in S Las Vegas, practically Henderson, and I just started a raised bed garden this year (tomatoes, bell peppers, zucchini and watermelon in there right now). I'm doing four varieties of tomatoes and a bell pepper in containers as well.

My garden is on a drip system, but I water the pots by hand. I was just wondering if you water by hand and how you manage to make sure you're giving regular amounts of water.

Thanks for all the great info!

Do you have an irrigation system? Pots dry out so quickly. Congratulations on twins.

I love the tomatoes. I grow tomatoes too and what I use is these upside down containers since I don't have wide gardening space.
