2009 Container Garden: Tomatoes

It's been a while since I've posted, but now Spring is nearing and I'm getting the itch to plant 2009's container garden. Honestly, I've already succumbed to temptation and put out two tomato plants--one each of the Patio and a Silvery Fir Tree varieties. It may be a little early, but I couldn't wait and the weather is nice.

Silvery Fir Tree (Started from seed January 10)

Patio

In addition to the Patio and Silvery Fir Tree I'll soon be setting out seedlings of the following varieties: Black Krim, Black Prince, Red Siberian, Hawaiian Tropic, German Queen, San Marzano, Brown Berry, Green Grape, and Bicolor Cherry. For the Fall I plan on replacing the poorest performers with Stupice, Black Cherry, and Jubilee.

great looking strong seedlings there. Best of luck for 2009's tomatoes, such a diverse list of types too.

Can I re-use the soil from my winter container garden. Or should I pony up the dough and get new stuff?
And what day are you going to start the rest of your planting. I thought not until middle of March?? I live in Henderson.

Thanks for the comments Prue and Laura. Laura, The last frost date is somewhere around March 10...So yes, I'm planting some things a bit early. The Silvery Fir Tree plant was just getting too large to live under my grow lamp and I was getting impatient. As for soil, I am re-using much of the same stuff with some compost and organic fertilizer added.

Hi, I'm in Henderson too. Just put in a 8x4, 8x2 and 4x4 with tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, peas and cantalope (the 4x4 is for herbs). I used raised beds with some compost from my 'pile'. It's getting warm too fast tho, darn it, hope it cools off again. Nice blog and great looking 'maters.

your seedlings looks great!

I also start some tomato seeds at January 10 but I have them outdoor and now I have the first small leaves.

John, how are these doing?

I put some out also, but the high winds last week wiped out most of them. I'm finding that the Black Prince is so far the most hardiest.

Hello there! Nice looking seedlings. How old are those? You know how long it takes to grow a tomato from seed to fruiting?
